SERVICE: Then and Now
Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ)

Sometimes the only thing somebody needs is a little support and that's what we did at DJJ. We gave our time to show support to the Birchwood Bulldogs, DJJ's basketball team, to encourage them and showed that someone cares
Palmetto SeniorCare (PACE)

Our participation with Palmetto SeniorCare had been an ongoing service project. In October of 2015, we tooks some senior citizens to the fair, showed them around, talked, and generally made sure that they had a good time. Andrea Jeffcoat, a recreation therapist working with the PACE program, said in a letter after the event: "Many of the participatnts stated that they had a wonderful time and really ejoyed talking with the 'young folk'." More recently we went to the mall with the seniors for the same purpose

Read Across America

Read Across America is a national event that celebrates reading and literacy. It is celebrated on Dr. Seuss' brithday. On this day we went to Forest Heights Elementary School and read Dr. Seuss to the students there.

St. Lawrence Place

St. Lawrence Place is a community where homeless families can seek shelter. These families are low income and often are not privileged with the "traditional" American Christmas. To remedy this we went there and decorated it with the Christmas spirit. We made wreaths, painted pinecones, and even built Christmas trees.

Auntie Karen Foundation

The Auntie Karen Foundation is a foundation with a big emphasis on the arts and entrepreneurship. Every year the have a Legends of... Concert, in which they bring in a musical legend and bring talented youth to meet and learn from a legend. At the concert there is also a silent auction, which is what we worked with. We did everything from constructing the bid books to distributing them and ecouraging those at the auction to bid.

Dressember

In 2009, Blythe Hill challenged herself to wear a dress every day of December (hence: Dressember). The next year, a few friends joined in. By the third year, her friends' friends began to participate, and it occurred to Blythe that there was more to this challenge than she originally thought. By 2013, the movement blossomed into something completely unexpected - an international campaign to aid the fight against sex trafficking.

PERIOD

PERIOD is a group of young activists across the U.S. united by the belief that menstrual care is a basic right. Nadya Okamoto and Vincent Forand co-founded PERIOD as high school students in 2014 after realizing that menstrual products are not reliably available to those who need them the most.

NAMI

NAMI, the National Alliance on Mental Illness, is the nation’s largest grassroots mental health organization dedicated to building better lives for the millions of Americans affected by mental illness. What started as a small group of families gathered around a kitchen table in 1979 has blossomed into the nation's leading voice on mental health. Today, NAMI is an association of hundreds of local affiliates, state organizations and volunteers who work in your community to raise awareness and provide support and education that was not previously available to those in need.
